History
Shelby Road Baptist Church is a result of several families joining together with a desire to see a local Baptist Church in Shelby, Michigan. It began as a small group Bible study in area homes. From there, the group began meeting weekly in the American Legion Hall on Shelby Road, with the first official service having 50 people in attendance!
After purchasing property from the Elliott estate in 1978, many local residents worked together on the first building project, saving the church over 50% of the costs in material and labor. On December 15, 1978, SRBC was officially recognized, and included a charter membership of 28 members. The new building was dedicated on March 29, 1980 with 121 in attendance, and became affiliated with the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (GARBC) later that year.
The congregation grew from 61 in 1984 to 112 members in 1989, doubling in five years. In 2002, the need for two identical Morning Worship Services became apparent, and we now run 500-525 between those two services!
In November 1988, an annual Praise Offering Celebration was instituted as a way for people to say “Thank You!” to God for all the good things He does for us during the year. That first offering totaled $36,354.59, received from a congregation of 91! People began to catch the vision of what God can do with grateful hearts. In 2003, the first $17,000 of the Praise Offering went to build a church in Togo, West Africa, and in 2004 we purchased nursery furniture for Mercy General Hospital Lakeshore Campus here in Shelby, demonstrating that we value Life, our community families, and our local hospital! The first $17,000 of our 2006 Praise Offering went toward our Bible Translation project which is now completed. This is the first translation and printing of the New Testament in the Inner Seraji language for a people group in India. The first $35,000 of our 2007 Praise Offering ($138,677.23) went to build an orphanage for children of AIDS victims in India! The additional monies given to God through these offerings have allowed us to retire our debt early on every building project.
We built a new, larger sanctuary in 1991 and also added a gymnasium/fellowship hall. A larger sanctuary, a new youth wing, and expanded gymnasium (Family Life Center) were completed in 1999, and an office complex was also completed in February 2003 to house a growing Staff. Our most recent building project called The Roadhouse – a youth center complete with game room and café – was finished in 2009 and now houses our growing teen ministry.
Many teens, couples and families have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and become a part of Shelby Road. We continue to be excited about what God will do here at SRBC in the years ahead.
